Update on yellow-legged (Asian) hornet

This is an update on yellow-legged hornet (also known as Asian hornet) sightings in GB. 24 nests have been found this year.

On 11 November, a nest was found in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, following a report of a single hornet entering a cheese shop. The nest has been destroyed, removed, and sent for analysis. The National Bee Unit have continued to monitor various sites in Kent and East Sussex but have seen very little hornet activity. The surveillance will finish at the end of this week (this update was provided on the 15th November).

Information on previous sightings, including a map of nest locations, can be found on the website of the National Bee Unit.

We would be grateful for your support in helping to raise awareness and encourage reporting of any further sightings. Any suspected sightings should ideally be reported via the Asian Hornet Watch app or the online reporting form.

For more details on identification and reporting, including Alert posters and ID sheets to help with awareness raising, please visit the Asian hornet alert page.
